Giovanni Salmeri

"A passage to Cilicia: emperors, governors and scientists at Misis"

Giovanni Salmeri is professor of Roman History and Latin Epigraphy at the University of Pisa. He has studied at the University of Catania and at the University of Oxford. His main research interest is in the history of Asia Minor under the Roman and Byzantine Empires. Since 1990 he has organized more than twenty international conferences and seminars mostly dealing with the social and economic history of the Eastern Mediterranean. In 2003 he has been visiting professor at the University of Yale, and he has given lectures and seminars at the Universities of Oxford, Exeter, Tours, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Berkeley, Duke, Berlin, Princeton and others more. From 2000 to 2011, together with Anna Lucia D’Agata, he has directed the Cilicia Survey Project in the region of Çukurova, and now he his responsible for Ancient History in the Misis Höyük Excavations Project. From 2011 to 2017 he has been director of Course of Doctorate in History of the University of Pisa. He is author of more than one hundred publications including monographs and scientific articles on history and culture of Asia Minor.
